MAY 2012 UPDATE: 2012 Spring Turkey Season is now over at the Ranch. Turkeys were plentiful for the past several months, probably because of the fact that our River has never run dry through the drouth of record experienced for the past 3 years. As of February 1 each year, we shut down the axis doe meat hunts once again until July 1; we are now booking axis doe meat hunts beginning in July 2012. The reason for this is the larger number of dependent fawns in the early and late spring. Our Regular WT season was booked to capacity for this year, so you should book early if you wish to hunt with us during the 2012 Regular Seasons. It is sometimes possible to book meat hunts during regular whitetail seasons, but this would not allow taking of whitetail deer or turkey. Regular Exotic Trophy Hunts can be booked any time of the year, but only outside Regular Whitetail and Spring Turkey Seasons. Hunting pressure is light on our Ranch, so there is a variety of game available throughout the year. We have a very nice furnished cabin for the comfort and enjoyment of our hunters, all-electric, with AC, heat, all cooking utensils, microwave, hotplate, small fridge, etc. Frankly, the entire Central Texas Hill Country has been experiencing an unprecedented drouth for the past several years, and Fall 2011 was drier than ever, continuing on throughout the 2011 spring and summer. Without good food conditions, the whitetails appear to have suffered some mortality, especially does and fawns. There are usually a few nice trophy-size WT bucks; WT bucks taken this 2011 season were in surprisingly good condition, even though does were less so. Axis and aoudads don't seem to have been affected as much as WT's. Amazingly, huge flocks of 40 or more turkeys are still being seen at the feeders, and many are roosting in the pecan bottom near the river. Unique to our Regular Season WT packages is the fact that we allow substitution of axis does for whitetails at no extra cost, thereby increasing hunting opportunity during regular WT season. Axis, aoudad and feral hogs may be taken in addition to any regular season packages. Fine record book aoudad rams with 28" to over 30" horns come to the mountain feeders on a daily basis, ranging freely in and out of our ranch, since there are no high fences and feeding continues year-round. Beautiful record book size Axis bucks in "hard horn" may be observed throughout the year, but mostly in spring and summer, which is the major axis breeding season. Some individuals will be in velvet at that time, not going into hard horn until fall and winter. The loud "braying" of axis bucks resounds through the river bottom and valley when they are in rut, and they do sound gigantic! Hogs, ranging in size from piglets to trophies over 200 pounds, are seen regularly; free hogs come with every booked hunt, and you more than likely will get a chance at one. WE ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT OVER-HUNT OUR PLACE WITH EXCESSIVE BOOKINGS, SO CALL SOON IF YOU WANT TO OBTAIN ONE OF THE LIMITED NUMBERS OF HUNTS OFFERED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR For more information or to
book a hunt, please contact John or Linda by calling 512-756-1918. If you leave a message we will call you back as soon as possible. ********************************************************************************

MORE ABOUT OUR PLACE
Bring your rifle or your bow (and your camera) and
come hunt with us! We have year-round
hunting packages available, whether you are interested in native whitetails,
turkeys, or exotics such as Axis deer, Aoudad Sheep or wild hogs. J&L's Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain Ranch is
remotely located in the beautiful Southwest Texas Hill Country, not far from
Rocksprings, TX in Edwards County. The
country is rugged and beautiful, with steep canyons in the "breaks" of the
Edwards Plateau, where the rivers begin their flow southward to the Gulf of
Mexico.
The property is bordered on the east by the clear, cool
waters of the East Prong of the Nueces River and a heavily wooded pecan
bottom. Because of the unique location
in a sharp bend of the river, wild game of all varieties naturally gathers
here, drawn by the abundant forage and social opportunities. Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain forms the west
boundary, overshadowing the river bottom.
Wild game frequently seen includes native whitetail deer, Rio Grande turkeys, wild hogs (Russian and feral),as well as exotic Axis deer, and Aoudad sheep. Several record book Axis bucks
have been taken recently. Aoudad sheep
also grow to record book sizes on the mountain side of the Ranch. There are no high fences, thereby providing more of a fair chase hunt. We maintain feeders and blinds to provide better chances of success.> As participants in a Wildlife Management Plan with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, we do not run livestock and strive to keep the habitat as favorable to wildlife as possible. Because the environment is fragile and we want to provide maximum protection, we do not allow the use of ATV's or four-wheelers on the Ranch.
We also limit hunting to only a few hunts per year, never "over hunting"
the land. As a hunter at the Ranch, you will be pretty much on your
own, though we will provide assistance if requested. You will be staying in a nice new, well-equipped cabin near the
house. We will show you to the blinds,
provide information as to feeder times, and give advice. We always have recent videos of what we've
seen at the various hunting blinds for your viewing enjoyment. Given all that, your relative skill as a
hunter will largely determine your success.
Because we are not a high fence ranch, we cannot guarantee a kill, but
your chances should be excellent. ********************************************************************************
